Going through some old storage boxes in the garage the other day I came across the first digital camera I owned. In 1997 I was the proud owner of a Agfa ePhoto 307. At the time I was working for Mitsui Computer and as an Agfa dealer was able to be an early adopter for digital photography. The ePhoto 307 was at the forefront of digital photography but little did I know at time but digital photography would become the mainstream “norm”.
The ePhoto 307 has two resolution modes; standard at 320 x 240 and high at a whooping 640 x 480… all at 0.35 megapixels. It stores up to 72 standard or 36 high-resolution, 24-bit colour images. To transfer the images from the camera to my computer I had to use proprietary software from Agfa called Agfa Photowise and transmit that across serial RS232.
OK now fast forward 15 years and I have a camera built into my iPhone 5. It is 8 megapixel (Apple has also added a panorama mode, which I use a lot, allowing me to capture wraparound images resulting in an image that can be up to 28 megapixels.) Image size is 3264 x 2448 plus it comes with autofocus, LED flash, simultaneous HD video and image recording, touch focus, geo-tagging, face detection, panorama, HDR, video 1080p@30fps, LED video light, video stabilization and geo-tagging as additional features.
What will the next 15 years in photography bring?
